As engines roar and race cars zoom, you too can experience the thrill of the track – and raise money for lifesaving cancer research – with a front-row seat in a GT Mustang at The Bend Motorsport Park.
Proudly brought to you by Thyme Group, the Mustang Experience is a three-hour package of fast laps around The Bend for three people in Thyme’s GT Mustang, which is set up as a full race car.
With safety at the forefront, you and your mates can get behind the wheel of the car under the careful guidance of a professional driver, reaching speeds of 200km/h.
Part proceeds from the $3,500 experience are donated directly to the Flinders Foundation to support research into multiple myeloma – the incurable blood cancer Thyme Group’s Director Brian Skinner was diagnosed with in 2017.
Cruising for a cause
Funds raised from the Mustang Experience support research by Flinders University Dr Craig Wallington-Gates, who is on a mission to find new and improved therapies for people with the disease.
“Multiple myeloma is an aggressive cancer that is currently incurable. And it’s increasing in incidence around the world,” Dr Wallington-Gates says.
“I want to help the highest-risk myeloma patients – those who have the poorest chance of survival.
“We can not only identify patients with high-risk, poor prognosis myeloma, but we can do it within 24 hours.
“My research aims to develop very specific treatments for these high-risk myeloma patients. For people in this situation, every hour, every day, matters.”
Brian’s plight
In 2017, Brian’s life changed forever when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, one of Australia’s most common cancers.
Compounding his health crisis, Brian also has amyloidosis – the build-up of amyloid proteins in multiple organs. This condition complicates multiple myeloma and precludes him from participating in any potentially life-saving or life-prolonging clinical trials.
He says fundraising is vital to help carry on the work of Dr Wallington-Gates and his team, although eventually Thyme Group would like to support all kinds of cancer research.
“Multiple myeloma is a little-known disease that doesn’t have a cure, and this research is about finding a way to keep it in remission,” Brian says.
“The more education we can get out there about this disease, the better.
“I thank everyone who is supporting us.”
